Study abroad

Study in Canada

Canada is a leading study destination with universities, colleges and career-focused programmes. Students should choose a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and check programme eligibility before applying.

Visa process

Study Permit. Apply after receiving a Letter of Acceptance (LOA). Most applicants also need a Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL); Quebec generally requires a CAQ.

Government / visa fees - subject to change

Study Permit: CAD 150. Biometrics: CAD 85 where applicable. Important: the former Student Direct Stream (SDS) ended on 8 November 2024. A GIC is no longer an SDS requirement, but a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from an eligible Canadian financial institution can be used as one form of proof of funds.

Financial requirement

For applications on/after 1 September 2026, the living-expense amount outside Quebec is CAD 23,448 for one applicant, excluding tuition and transportation. Applicants must show funds for tuition, living costs and transportation and explain how the full programme will be funded.

Student rules & regulations

Maintain valid study status, remain enrolled and actively pursue studies. Follow the conditions printed on the study permit. Do not rely on future employment income to demonstrate required initial financial capacity.

Work rights during study

Eligible students may work up to 24 hours per week off campus during regular academic sessions. Full-time work may be permitted during eligible scheduled breaks if all conditions are met.

After study

Eligible graduates may apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Eligibility depends on current IRCC rules, DLI/programme eligibility, study duration and other conditions.

PR / settlement options

Potential pathways include Canadian skilled work experience and eligible federal/provincial economic immigration programmes. PR is not automatic after study.
